In a surprising turn of events, developer NetherRealm has unveiled a Definitive Edition of its divisive title from 2023, Mortal Kombat 1. This unexpected release has generated buzz among fans, prompting speculation that the game might be heading towards its final stages of development.

The Mortal Kombat 1: Definitive Edition launched overnight on various platforms, including the Switch, Xbox Series X/S, PlayStation 5, and PC, without any substantial marketing campaign. This version integrates the base game with its Khaos Reigns expansion, the character Shang Tsung, two Kombat Packs featuring additional fighters and Kameo characters, in-game currency, and a diverse selection of skins. Moreover, players can benefit from a free update that introduces Animality finishing moves across the board.

This collection encapsulates approximately a year and a half’s worth of updates following the game’s contentious initial launch, which faced backlash over “reduced features, unpolished mechanics, and an outdated online experience,” as highlighted by Chris Moyse in his Nova Play review. While the game faced criticism for its monetization strategies post-launch, NetherRealm has persisted in delivering downloadable content, with one notable highlight being the addition of the iconic T-1000 from the Terminator franchise in March.

Despite the inclusion of the T-1000 character, hints regarding future downloadable content plans appear to be minimal. Only a few cosmetic skins linked to the forthcoming Mortal Kombat film sequel have surfaced so far. Player counts on Steam have plateaued in the low thousands, often matching those seen in the much older Mortal Kombat 11. Given this context, fans interpret the launch of the Definitive Edition as an indication of waning developmental activity, even making light of NetherRealm chief Ed Boone’s earlier assurances regarding ongoing support for the title.

As one user expressed on the Mortal Kombat subreddit, “The release of the Definitive Edition seems to signal the end for the previous versions, so… I suppose that’s it.” This sentiment resonates with many, ranging from skeptical cynicism to reluctant acceptance. Some have revived assertions made by a reputable leaker last year, suggesting that Mortal Kombat 1’s development could stall due to lackluster DLC sales. “We can always hold out hope for more beige skins with red trim,” another fan humorously remarked.

While Warner Bros., the publisher of Mortal Kombat, has not officially confirmed the end of Mortal Kombat 1’s development following the release of the Definitive Edition, inquires for clarification have been made.

For those interested in this Definitive Edition, it is priced at £54.99/$69.99 for PS5, Xbox Series X/S, and PC players, while Switch users will find it priced at $59.99. Additionally, a £49.99/$59.99 upgrade option ($49.99 for Switch) is available for players who already own Mortal Kombat 1, allowing them to access all features in the new edition without purchasing each DLC separately.
