DETROIT — The Michigan Wolverines are gearing up for a highly anticipated 2025 football season, marked by significant changes in their roster. The offseason witnessed the exodus of defensive stalwarts Mason Graham, Kenneth Grant, Will Johnson, and Josaiah Stewart, who have all taken their talents to the NFL. Despite these substantial losses, the Wolverines’ defense—which previously ranked No. 10 in the nation for total defense—remains poised to demonstrate its mettle and adapt to the evolving landscape of college football.
Recent performances, particularly during the ReliaQuest Bowl against Alabama, offered a glimpse into the Wolverines’ potential. In that game, nine of the projected starting eleven defensive players took the field, successfully limiting Alabama’s powerful offense to just 13 points. Safety Brandyn Hillman emerged as a standout performer, and as he embarks on his junior year, he is filled with confidence regarding the squad’s ability to thrive despite the absence of last season’s high-profile players.
“I genuinely believe we have the best defensive unit in the nation,” Hillman asserted during a discussion on the Locked On Wolverines Podcast. He credited the enthusiasm of the younger players, such as himself, Jyaire Hill, and the Metcalf brothers, alongside the reliable presence of veteran players. “Even without major contributors like Mason and K.G., we still generated pressure on the quarterback. This season is shaping up to be pivotal, and we are eager to prove ourselves,” Hillman remarked.
Hillman’s journey to a starting position is particularly significant, given the mounting competition. A wave of four-star freshmen and impactful transfers, including the Metcalf brothers from Arkansas and Tré Williams from Clemson, have heightened the race for playing time. Additionally, Alabama transfer Damon Payne has bolstered the line-up, showcasing Michigan’s tactical approach to recruitment and talent acquisition.
Reflecting on the competitive environment, Hillman shared insights on the importance of teamwork within the defensive backfield. “Consistency is crucial; mutual trust is non-negotiable,” he explained. “Talent alone won’t seal your position; if your teammates lack confidence in your abilities, your playing time could be at stake. Showing up every day and proving your worth is how you earn your spot,” he emphasized, underlining the vital role of team dynamics in achieving peak performance.
As the season opener against New Mexico looms on August 30 at The Big House, excitement is building among Michigan fans. With a revamped roster and an unwavering spirit, the Wolverines aim to reassert their dominance among college football’s elite defenses.
