This electrifying tradition was born 25 years ago, back in the fall of 2000.
However, on an unforgettable Wednesday evening, Hokie fans experienced something extraordinary.
They witnessed the magic of Enter Sandman performed live, as Metallica graced Lane Stadium with their electrifying presence during their M72 World Tour.
When James Hetfield, the charismatic frontman of Metallica, hinted at the track’s arrival towards the end of the concert, the crowd of over 60,000 erupted in jubilant excitement.
“I think we’re missing something,” Hetfield exclaimed, rallying the Hokies’ fan spirit with a chant of “Let’s go, Hokies!”
As the iconic song thundered through Lane Stadium, the energy became palpable.
It wasn’t just a concert; it was a seismic event. Literally.
The Virginia Tech Seismological Observatory noted that when Enter Sandman blared from the speakers, the ground itself trembled, registering a small earthquake!
This moment beautifully encapsulates the fervent spirit of college football—not during the season, yet leaving an indelible mark by a passionate fanbase belting out their beloved team’s anthem.
We have seen it everywhere—from Ohio State’s famed marching band creating an unforgettable spectacle when they dot the ‘i’, to Wisconsin’s Camp Randall erupting during Jump Around.
Clemson’s players rub Howard’s Rock with electric anticipation before charging down the hill into Memorial Stadium, while Colorado’s Ralphie leads the team onto the field every Saturday.
Tradition thrives at every college corner, unique to each institution.
Yet, judging by the raucous atmosphere on that Wednesday night, it’s hard to argue Virginia Tech’s tradition doesn’t stand proudly amongst the best.
