This offseason, the New Orleans Saints have significantly revamped their roster, with particular attention to the running back position. This shift comes in light of recent challenges outside of the standout Alvin Kamara, whose performances have often overshadowed the rest. To inject new life into the backfield, the Saints have drafted Devin Neal, signed undrafted free agent Marcus Yarns, and brought in Velus Jones Jr. via free agency.
As the 2024 season wrapped up, the depth chart showcased a notable mix that included Alvin Kamara, Kendre Miller, Jordan Mims, Jamaal Williams, and Clyde Edwards-Helaire, with Xazavian Valladay set to return from the practice squad. However, with recent departures, both Mims and Williams are no longer on the team. Last season, the collective effort from this group resulted in 348 rushing attempts, with Kamara accounting for 228 of those. The remaining carries were split between Mims and Williams, who together only managed 68 attempts. This leaves a considerable void behind Kamara, where newcomers like Neal could step up and influence the game.
The Saints seem focused on moving beyond players who haven’t consistently contributed, seeking fresh talent capable of making a tangible impact on the field. Although Jones Jr. might not be a major headline, he has the potential to shine, especially in special teams. The competition among the two rookies for a spot on the roster will be interesting to watch, particularly as they directly challenge Kendre Miller. Given Miller’s injury history, there’s a promising opportunity for either him or the newcomers to make significant strides. Observing the evolution of this running back group throughout the offseason will certainly be compelling.
