Many users have expressed frustration over the repositioning of media playback controls—especially the frequently accessed play/pause button—which has been moved to the left side of the screen in left-hand-drive vehicles. This shift has put it closer to the driver but has disturbed the muscle memory established by long-time users, who are now grappling with a different layout that may hinder their usual driving comfort.
Despite the current beta status, Google is in a prime position to gather user insights that could guide further refinements. The introduction of Gemini, in particular, aims to enhance road-tripping by making tasks smoother and more intuitive. For example, the AI assistant can now engage in natural, conversational interactions, providing recommendations or addressing questions to improve the driving experience.
Gemini is not only expanding upon existing Google Assistant features but is also designed to better assist drivers and passengers alike. Those using it can request specific destinations—like nearby dog-friendly service areas or the fastest electric vehicle charging stations—making it easier to plan stops on longer journeys efficiently.
Additionally, by integrating preferred messaging apps, Gemini offers the ability to summarize incoming messages and even translate them for multilingual conversations, relieving users from the burden of tedious scrolling through lengthy text threads. This feature is particularly helpful during road trips when passengers often bombard drivers with questions like “Are we there yet?” or when staying in touch with friends and family on long drives.
Looking ahead, Google plans to roll out Gemini more broadly in the coming months, ensuring its compatibility with vehicles equipped with the Android Automotive OS.
