Excitement is building as Joel Edgerton takes center stage in the highly anticipated Train Dreams, a mesmerizing portrayal of America in the early twentieth century. After a captivating screening at Sundance just a few months back, Netflix made a bold move, snatching up the film for an eye-popping $16 million. With its elegant storytelling, this film might just find itself in the midst of awards season discussions, provided it receives the spotlight it deserves. Our very own Chris Bumbray couldn’t help but sing its praises, stating, “It’s the kind of movie that lingers in your mind long after the credits roll; it deserves a massive promotional push, as it could very well be among the finest films this year.”
But that’s not all for Edgerton! He’s also set to star alongside the talented Toni Collette in a black comedy titled Fangs. As reported by Variety, this thrilling ride delves deep into themes of privilege, power, and dangerously alluring fantasies. This exciting project marks the directorial debut of Lucy McKendrick, who will also take on a role in the film alongside Edgerton and Collette. The plot twists around Teddy (played by McKendrick), the daughter of a powerful private prison mogul, who finds herself irresistibly drawn to a charismatic inmate named Fangs (Edgerton). As her obsession spirals out of control, so does her life, leading to what is sure to be a spectacular and chaotic downfall.
Under the banner of Ahimsa Films, Fangs is being produced by Rebecca Yeldham, known for her work on The Gift and The Motorcycle Diaries. She’s teaming up with Michael Costigan of Aggregate Films, alongside Charlie Polinger and Toby Nalbandian from Truant Pictures. With a generous backing from Screen Australia, production is set to kick off in Sydney this August, which is already generating buzz among fans and industry insiders alike.
Reflecting on this unique opportunity, Yeldham and Costigan shared, “Finding a script as entertaining, daring, and original as Lucy McKendrick’s Fangs is a rare treat. We can’t wait to support her vision and bring this bold, witty, and timely film to audiences, especially alongside two of Australia’s most cherished actors, Toni and Joel.” Alison Thompson and Mark Gooder of Cornerstone, who are managing international rights and co-representing the U.S., echoed this enthusiasm, adding, “Lucy’s vision for her debut feature is extraordinary, and casting Joel and Toni speaks volumes about the brilliance of her original, entertaining script.”
