In an exciting revelation for fans of the legendary hack-and-slash series, Hideki Kamiya, the visionary director of *Devil May Cry*, has expressed a strong desire to reimagine the original game. Acknowledging that the classic title, which debuted over two decades ago, “really does feel like a 24-year-old game design,” he emphasized the need for a modernized approach.
Back in December, Kamiya confirmed his renewed collaboration with Capcom, having previously left the company in 2006 after creating iconic titles like *Resident Evil 2*, *Okami*, and *Viewtiful Joe*. During a recent episode of his YouTube show, inspired by fan inquiries following the announcement, he stated, “I’d love to do that.” You can watch the full discussion here: Watch on YouTube.
Kamiya candidly confessed, “I usually don’t replay my own games after release,” and this includes *Devil May Cry*. However, he occasionally catches gameplay clips that make him reflect on its age. When asked about his vision for a potential remake, he said, “With today’s technology and game design approach… I’d want to remake it from the ground up.” He teased, “If that ever happens… well, I don’t think seriously unless it’s really happening.” Fans can only hope that this passionate plea leads to something tangible. And while he’s at it, why not bring back *Viewtiful Joe* too?
Since its groundbreaking release in 2001, *Devil May Cry*, which follows the demon-slaying exploits of the silver-haired hero Dante, has culminated in five major installments (plus the contentious reboot *DmC: Devil May Cry* in 2013). Interestingly, Kamiya directed only the first title. After departing from PlatinumGames in 2023, he established a new studio called Clovers, now collaborating with Capcom on a sequel to the beloved *Okami*.
Though the *Devil May Cry* franchise has been quiet since the successful launch of the fifth major installment in 2019, it has recently regained attention with Netflix’s anime adaptation. Nova Play’s Graeme Virtue praised it as a “spirited take on the mythos,” showcasing how the series continues to inspire new forms of media.
