Florida basketball forward Alex Condon is currently at a crossroads as he deliberates between staying in the 2025 NBA Draft and returning for another season at the University of Florida. After playing a crucial role in the Gators’ journey to winning the national championship, Condon finds himself drawing attention from NBA teams and facing a pivotal career decision.
During the recent NBA Draft Combine, Condon showcased his skills in shooting drills, making 13 of 25 attempts in the three-point contest and connecting on 16 out of 30 shots taken off the dribble. Although he decided against participating in scrimmages, he engaged actively in team interviews and evaluations, indicating his serious consideration of a professional career.
Standing at an impressive 6 feet 11 inches, the Australian talent is projected to be picked somewhere between the 20th and 35th spots in this year’s draft. Yet, he remains open to the possibility of returning to Florida if his draft position doesn’t meet his expectations. “I’ve got a good situation waiting for me at Florida,” Condon told Sports Illustrated’s Kevin Sweeney. “It has to be a good situation for me to stay (in the draft), but feedback I’m getting from teams right now is positive, and I’m ready to stay in if I need to.”
Head coach Todd Golden, who accompanied Condon at the combine, emphasized the importance of careful decision-making regarding the forward’s future. “You’ve got a guy like Condo, who’s a great prospect,” Golden remarked during ESPN2’s coverage. “For him, it’s more like, ‘Do you want to come back and potentially be a lottery guy next year?’ Those are the conversations we’re having.”
Condon’s impact on the Gators this past season cannot be overstated. As a sophomore, he averaged 10.6 points and 7.5 rebounds per game, leading the team with 49 blocks. His performances included seven double-doubles and 18 games scoring in double figures, earning him accolades from both coaches and national media as an All-SEC selection.
As the May 29 deadline to withdraw from the draft draws near, Condon’s decision will be significant, not only for his own future but also for the Gators’ prospects in the upcoming season. Should he return, he would emerge as one of the most promising frontcourt players in college basketball, potentially positioning himself for a lottery pick in 2026.
This situation highlights the multifaceted challenges faced by young athletes, who must balance their immediate ambitions with long-term career strategies. Regardless of his choice, the implications for both Condon and the Florida basketball program will be profound and lasting.
