Rookie Running Back DJ Giddens of the Indianapolis Colts: Embracing Competition and Learning from Jonathan Taylor
The Indianapolis Colts’ rookie sensation, DJ Giddens, is geared up to make his mark, but he also carries a deep respect for the established star, Jonathan Taylor. Giddens isn’t just looking to compete; he’s ready to soak up knowledge from one of the league’s finest.
“I have no issue taking a backseat, especially to someone as exceptional as him. There’s a wealth of knowledge to gain,” Giddens reflected about Taylor, via Horseshoe Huddle. “I plan on being a sponge, absorbing everything. I won’t pretend to know it all; I’m here to learn.”
In 2021, Taylor dazzled the league, leading all players with an impressive 1,800 rushing yards and securing the title for the most rushing touchdowns that season. After dealing with injuries throughout 2022 and 2023, Taylor fought his way back to surpass the 1,000-yard mark last season, showcasing his prowess as one of the NFL’s most reactive and productive running backs.
As everyone knows, this backfield has Taylor’s name written all over it. However, Colts GM Chris Ballard acknowledged during the NFL combine that the team is hungry for increased output from their backup running back this year.
This sets the perfect stage for Giddens and fellow free-agent signee Khalil Herbert to make their impact felt.
While Taylor will undoubtedly handle the majority of the carries, having a dependable presence like Giddens behind him will be essential in managing the demands of a lengthy NFL season and minimizing the inevitable toll that heavy usage can take on a player.
Moreover, being able to generate dynamic plays when Taylor is resting on the sidelines will add a crucial layer of depth and versatility to the Colts’ offense.
Beyond just his running capabilities, Giddens has the potential to significantly enhance the Colts’ passing game—something the offense lacked the previous season. During his last two years in college, he accumulated 72 targets and nearly 600 receiving yards.
While we’re well aware of who holds the starting running back position, the backup roles of RB2 and RB3 remain hotly contested, along with the opportunities each player will receive weekly. The more Giddens and Herbert impress, the more touches they’ll earn under head coach Shane Steichen’s watchful eye.
With this competitive atmosphere fueling him, Giddens is ready to make a splash in offseason workouts and training camp, all while aiming to secure as many opportunities on the field as possible.
“It’s definitely a competitive environment,” Giddens stated confidently. “Everyone is coming in with the mindset of wanting to start; that’s how it should be. But regardless of the situation, I’ll continue to put in the work without fretting over it.”
“That’s just my approach. I thrive on competition. I’ll embrace my role, and as long as I’m contributing to the team, that’s what truly counts.”
