While Marathon has been the spotlight game for Bungie lately, the studio is eager to remind fans that Destiny 2 continues to thrive—and it’s committed to supporting it for the foreseeable future. Excitingly, Bungie has unveiled the next significant multi-year narrative arc for Destiny 2, which will roll out a paid Star Wars-themed expansion by year’s end.

Last September, Bungie hinted at a transformation in Destiny 2’s update model, moving away from its traditional large expansions to introduce two smaller, paid expansions each year. Following the latest developer stream, we have a clearer picture of what this plan entails, set to take effect this July.

With the conclusion of Destiny 2’s expansive Light and Dark Saga, Bungie has launched the new Fate Saga. Kicking off on July 15th with the Year of Prophecy and the debut of the paid expansion, The Edge of Fate, Bungie describes this launch as “the beginning of a long journey.” The studio aims to weave a rich narrative, albeit one that will leave players with many questions for the time being. Each expansion will gradually unveil answers, with their biannual releases promising a quicker delivery of crucial story elements.

The Edge of Fate transports players to the enigmatic new location, Kepler, designed to evoke the puzzle-solving and exploration challenges reminiscent of Destiny 2’s dungeons. Players can anticipate a thrilling new raid, fresh enemies, diverse weapons, and special abilities tied to this new destination, including the Matterspark ability, which allows Guardians to morph and navigate the environment—one of these transformations is notably reminiscent of the Morph Ball from Metroid.

Marking the commencement of the new Reclamation season, The Edge of Fate will also be accompanied by a substantial free core game update. This update introduces fresh events and challenges, along with a revamped activity selection screen dubbed The Portal, designed to streamline access to Fireteam Ops, Pinnacle Ops, Crucible Ops, and Solo Ops. Additionally, players can look forward to the Armour 3.0 rework and a new tier system, with a permanent shooting range arriving later for raid teams to practice strategies against various foes and bosses.

Destiny 2’s Star Wars expansion is set to launch in December.Watch on YouTube

On September 9th, a significant free update titled Ash & Iron will be released, although details about it are sparse beyond its classification as a “major update” featuring an associated Rewards Pass. The most peculiar announcement from today, however, is the Renegades expansion, scheduled for December 2nd. While the connection between this Star Wars-themed expansion and Bungie’s overarching Fate Saga remains unclear, the studio assures players it will be “integral,” blending Destiny’s unique storytelling and mechanics with elements from the beloved sci-fi franchise. Expect a new dungeon, new characters, innovative activities, and evolved gameplay mechanics designed to surprise gamers.

The Year of Prophecy will receive its fourth and final major free update, titled Shadow & Order, on March 3rd of next year. For those interested in this year’s expansions, Bungie has opened up pre-orders for each standalone expansion, as well as various bundles for the Year of Prophecy, available on PS4, PS5, Xbox One, Xbox Series X, and PC. Interested players can find further details in its announcement post.
