In a heartfelt announcement on Saturday morning, Derek Carr, the New Orleans Saints quarterback, made the poignant decision to retire from the NFL at the tender age of 34. Reports have surfaced indicating that this life-changing choice comes in light of a severe shoulder injury.
The four-time Pro Bowl star, who devoted the majority of his career to the Oakland and Las Vegas Raiders, shared insights into his choice. After much prayer and thoughtful discussions with his beloved wife, Heather, he realized that it was time to hang up his cleats for good.
In his heartfelt statement, Carr reflected, “For over 11 years, we have been incredibly blessed, and we are forever grateful for this experience.” The gratitude radiates from his words, capturing the love he has for the game and its supporters.
“Finding the right words to express our gratitude to all the teammates, coaches, management, ownership, team officials, and particularly the fans who have made this journey unforgettable is challenging,” he continued, echoing the heartfelt sentiments of so many who have followed his career.
As the Saints revealed, Carr began to feel discomfort in his right shoulder while preparing for the 2025 season, marking the first time he attempted to throw hard since incurring a hand injury and concussion on December 8.
Subsequent scans revealed he was grappling with a labral tear along with “significant degenerative changes to his rotator cuff,” presenting an uphill battle for the beloved player.
Although surgery was an option, the Saints stated that it would have sidelined Carr for the entirety of the 2025 season, casting doubt about his potential return to form.
“Your unwavering support has meant the world to us,” Carr expressed, touching the hearts of many who have stood by him through thick and thin.

Just last month, during a powerful moment at a church service, Carr shed light on his injury. He emphasized that while outside opinions may linger, what truly matters is “the word of God.”
His legacy in the NFL, shadowed by his older brother, David, who also graced the league, concludes with remarkable stats: just over 41,200 passing yards, 257 touchdowns, and 112 interceptions—a testament to his grit and talent.
