Great news for film lovers and action fans alike! Lionsgate Home Entertainment is gearing up to release the classic The Way of the Gun in stunning 4K Ultra HD, hitting store shelves on June 17th. This thrilling drama features the dynamic duo of Ryan Phillippe and Benicio del Toro and marks an impressive debut from director Christopher McQuarrie, who has since become a heavyweight in the Mission: Impossible series.
The plot follows two petty criminals, Parker (Phillippe) and Longbaugh (del Toro), who think they’ve hit the jackpot when they kidnap a surrogate mother, Robin (Juliette Lewis), just hours before she is due to give birth for a privileged couple. But what seems like a straightforward scheme for a potential windfall of $15 million quickly spirals into chaos. It turns out that Robin’s child is the heir of a formidable crime lord (Scott Wilson). Soon, their simple plot entangles them in a web of danger, with relentless hitmen and a menacing enforcer played by the legendary James Caan hot on their trail.

Reflecting on his evolution as a filmmaker, McQuarrie recently shared his thoughts with Nova Play on how The Way of the Gun set the stage for his career. He remarked, “The Way of the Gun was my first step in a long journey toward truly understanding how to communicate with an audience – guiding them to see what I want, hear what I want, and feel what I want. The film made me realize that I don’t dictate to the audience; I serve them.”
He also reflected on the irony of his path, saying, “I never intended to become an action director; I always dreamed of making historical dramas like Valkyrie (and still do). Tom Cruise saw something in The Way of the Gun that showcased my ability to create clarity and spatial awareness. Despite its shortcomings and intellectual focus, he recognized the visual storyteller in me. That film not only prepared me for what was next; it was my ticket to bigger opportunities. Tom, like I did for Ryan, gave me the chance to shine in a way that others may not have dared to.”
Meanwhile, the much-anticipated Mission: Impossible – The Final Reckoning is set to debut on May 23rd. Early buzz indicates jaw-dropping stunts, though some viewers have mentioned that the runtime might feel a tad excessive.
Will you be adding The Way of the Gun to your 4K collection? We’d love to hear your thoughts!
