The announcement of a new Blade reboot, featuring the talented Mahershala Ali, sent shockwaves through the comic book community when it was revealed at San Diego Comic-Con in July 2019. Fast-forward nearly six years, and the thrill remains palpable, yet fans are still eagerly awaiting the arrival of this highly anticipated film. The closest they’ve come to seeing Ali in action as the iconic vampire hunter was his brief vocal cameo in 2021’s Eternals. With no clear direction in sight, the mystery is deepening, leaving many—including the original franchise writer, David S. Goyer—scratching their heads. His guidance to Marvel Studios? “Give me a call.”
In a recent interview with Screen Rant while promoting his Apple TV+ series Murderbot, Goyer expressed his bewilderment over the film’s prolonged development. When asked if he would be interested in penning the reboot’s screenplay, he said, “I would. I’ve always loved the character and I love him, and I’ve been sitting on the sideline wondering, ‘What in the world is going on? Why is it taking so long?’ Because I’m a huge Marvel fan myself, and I’ve just been totally puzzled.”
As the rumors swirl, insiders disclosed that Mahershala Ali has been feeling “increasingly frustrated” with the drawn-out production timeline. Over the years, fellow actors Delroy Lindo and Aaron Pierre were announced as supporting characters, yet they’ve departed as their roles have been seemingly phased out. Lindo recently opened up about his character’s storyline, while Mia Goth, rumored to portray the formidable villain Lilith, remains optimistic. She believes these delays indicate Marvel’s commitment to crafting a stellar project. Interestingly, there were whispers that the reboot could have ventured into the 1920s setting, adding a fresh twist to the narrative.
A slew of talented writers have taken a crack at the script, including Stacy Osei-Kuffour (Watchmen), Michael Starrbury (When They See Us), and Nic Pizzolatto, known for his work on True Detective, among others. The diverse roster also features Beau DeMayo (The Witcher: Nightmare of the Wolf) and Michael Green (Logan), with Eric Pearson contributing his expertise from Thor: Ragnarok and Black Widow.
As fans, we can’t help but wonder: should Marvel Studios bring David S. Goyer back to lend his experience to the Blade reboot? We want to hear your thoughts! Share your insights with us in the comments below.
