Assassin’s Creed Shadows offers players an expansive world teeming with diverse characters, allowing for a free-form exploration that can sometimes lead to confusion. After wandering for 40 hours, you might find it challenging to recall not only who these characters are but also the motivations behind their quests, like the reasons they needed that one guy taken out.

Fortunately, the latest update, version 1.0.4, introduces Codex entries that provide detailed backgrounds for the key players, sidekicks, villains, and supporting characters you encounter throughout your journey. These entries will unlock as you meet each character, enhancing your understanding of the narrative.

Older titles in the Assassin’s Creed franchise featured similar Codex entries, but Shadows opted to focus primarily on historical and cultural insights. After receiving input from fans, Ubisoft has reinstated this feature, enriching the storytelling experience.

Today’s update is scheduled to go live at 2 PM UK time (10 AM Eastern, 7 AM Pacific) and will require around 4.6GB for PS5, 8.5GB for Steam, and 20GB for Xbox Series X/S.

In addition to the Codex updates, players can also look forward to the launch of the first free post-launch story mission, which offers additional interactions with some of the game’s secondary characters.

Titled “The Works of Luis Frois,” this quest centers around Yasuke’s Jesuit friend, making appearances throughout Shadows. Players can experience this new mission as either Yasuke or Naoe and will meet Lady Satoko along the way. Who is she, you ask? Well, that’s where the new Codex entries will come in handy.

Ubisoft’s roadmap for Assassin’s Creed Shadows indicates that players can expect a new free story quest each month, reminiscent of the “Lost Tales of Greece” from Assassin’s Creed Odyssey. Meanwhile, the first paid expansion for Shadows is set to launch in 2025.

The patch also addresses a variety of minor bugs, but one notable tweak is the adjustment to environmental destruction near religious buildings. Ubisoft has now made all props around altars and places of worship static to prevent any unintended damage.

In recent news, a leak from last month hinted that Assassin’s Creed Shadows might find its way to the Nintendo Switch 2. Additionally, an interview published by Nova Play with a historical researcher involved in the project addressed the cultural challenges faced during the game’s development.
