The first Smile film took cues from Finn’s acclaimed short Laura Hasn’t Slept, which earned the Special Jury Recognition Prize in the midnight short category at SXSW. Caitlin Stasey, known for her performance in Neighbours, reprises her role in the feature adaptation, expanding the storyline further. Centered around Dr. Rose Cotter, portrayed by Sosie Bacon, the plot presents a gripping tale where her life spirals into chaos following a traumatic event with a patient. This moment triggers a series of horrifying and inexplicable incidents, pushing Rose to confront her innermost fears and darkest memories as she fights for her sanity.
In the sequel, Smile 2, the stakes are raised as Skye Riley prepares for her monumental world tour, yet she becomes ensnared in a web of terrifying occurrences that shatter her perception of reality. As the pressures of fame mount, Skye must engage with the sinister shadows lurking in her past in order to reclaim her life before everything spirals out of control.
Naomi Scott, renowned for her performances in the live-action version of Aladdin and the reboot of Charlie’s Angels, takes center stage in Smile 2. She is supported by a talented cast, including Lukas Gage from The White Lotus and You, Rosemarie DeWitt, who gained acclaim from La La Land, and Dylan Gelula, known for her roles in Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt and Dream Scenario. Raúl Castillo from Army of the Dead, Miles Gutierrez-Riley of The Wilds, and Kyle Gallner, who reprises his earlier role, also contribute to the film’s dynamic ensemble. The first chapter of this franchise successfully captivated audiences, grossing a remarkable $138 million worldwide, with $69 million coming from domestic viewership.
