The Cannes Film Festival is poised to ignite excitement for action film aficionados with the upcoming unveiling of John Rambo, a captivating addition to the legendary franchise. Produced by Millennium Media, this latest installment serves as a prequel to the iconic 1982 film, First Blood, and aims to explore the nuanced origins of John Rambo. This character, originally brought to life by Sylvester Stallone, is a veteran Green Beret whose tumultuous past leads him into a fierce battle against an oppressive sheriff and his henchmen.
In the director’s chair, we find Jalmari Helander, celebrated for his unique storytelling in films like Rare Exports and Sisu. The script, crafted by Rory Haines and Sohrab Noshirvani—known for their work on Black Adam—is set to breathe new life into this well-loved character, with production slated to kick off in October in Thailand.
While plot details remain closely guarded, it’s confirmed that John Rambo will chronicle the early journey of Rambo as a Vietnam War veteran, prior to the events depicted in First Blood. Casting is still in its early stages, and though Stallone is currently not attached to the project, he is aware of its development. According to Deadline, the producers are open to the idea of his involvement should circumstances allow it.
Created by author David Morell, the character of John Rambo made his debut in First Blood, which launched a franchise that has grossed an astounding $800 million across five films. The most recent film, Rambo: Last Blood, faced challenges at the box office, amassing only $92 million globally. In this chapter, Rambo confronts his haunting history while unleashing his combat prowess for one last revenge mission. Though it received mixed reviews, fans particularly relished intense moments, such as the thrilling finale that showcased Rambo’s unrelenting ferocity within a labyrinth of underground tunnels.
“We are thrilled to present a new chapter in the Rambo legacy. This film pays tribute to one of cinema’s most iconic franchises, promising to engage both devoted fans and newcomers,” stated Jonathan Yunger, President of Millennium. “With Jalmari Helander at the helm, we are confident that we have found the perfect director to deliver a heart-pounding cinematic experience.”
Expressing his enthusiasm, Helander shared, “As a fan of Rambo since childhood, it feels surreal to have the opportunity to develop my own narrative within this universe. The journey that has brought me here feels like a fulfillment of a lifelong dream, and I am excited to reintroduce this legendary action hero to the audience.”
