Featuring celebrated saxophonists Kirk Whalum and Isaiah Katumwa, this event transcended a typical concert, evolving into a vibrant assembly of Uganda’s cultural elite and dedicated jazz fans who were eager to embrace an experience that redefined local entertainment.
The festival kicked off on an electrifying note, with the Black Roots Academy of Soul joining forces with jazz icon Tshaka Mayanja to create a captivating performance that honored the rich legacy of jazz and R&B pioneers.
Making a much-anticipated appearance after a six-year stint in the United States, Isaiah Katumwa ignited the crowd with his heartfelt melodies, especially his beloved hit “My Joy.” The excitement was palpable, as fans clapped and danced, and Katumwa took a moment to reflect on his journey home while celebrating nearly three decades in the jazz scene.
“This festival is a beautiful homecoming for me,” Katumwa stated, his emotion evident. “I am thankful to dfcu Bank for providing this opportunity after my long absence and for being a part of my incredible journey as I approach such a significant milestone.”
As the night progressed, Kirk Whalum, the Grammy-winning saxophonist, took to the stage for a show-stopping finale. His seamless blend of jazz and gospel held the audience in a collective trance, culminating in a standing ovation during his poignant closing worship set just shy of midnight, leaving an indelible mark on the evening’s cultural resonance.
“I feel embraced by the warmth of Kampala,” Whalum remarked, clearly moved. “Returning here to perform is a true privilege, and I extend my sincere gratitude to dfcu Bank for crafting such a memorable evening.”
Beyond the remarkable performances, the festival turned the venue into a sensory wonderland. Attendees dressed to impress, mingled amidst elegantly decorated surroundings, and indulged in bespoke experiences, culminating in a celebration that extended beyond music to encompass the luxurious lifestyle.
