After two years filled with eager anticipation, Austin Butler is set to take center stage in the cinematic adaptation of Don Winslow’s electrifying novel, City on Fire. The project is gaining traction with the recent announcement that Matt Ross, renowned for his work in Captain Fantastic, will helm the film, as reported by Deadline.

This compelling narrative serves as the beginning of a trilogy that intricately weaves the tales of two rival criminal empires—one Irish, the other Italian—who vie for dominance in New England. The plot takes a thrilling twist with a modern heroine akin to Helen of Troy, whose actions spark a brutal conflict. Central to the storyline is Danny Ryan, who transforms from a mere street thug into an influential leader as he confronts the Mafia, local cops, and federal authorities to protect his family and his territory. If everything unfolds successfully, it seems quite possible that adaptations of the sequels, City of Dreams and City in Ruins, could also make their way to the big screen.

The screenplay for City on Fire is being crafted by Justin Kuritzkes, who is recognized for his role in Challengers. Austin Butler will be collaborating with the esteemed David Heyman of Heyday Films and Shane Salerno from Story Factory as producers, creating a buzz of excitement around this venture.

Many may remember Matt Ross from notable performances in American Psycho and The Aviator. Besides his film accolades, he has showcased his skills on television, notably as Alby Grant in Big Love and Gavin Belson in Silicon Valley. Ross made a significant mark with his debut in directing with 28 Hotel Rooms and later impressed audiences with Captain Fantastic, which follows a family thrust back into society after a decade of living off the grid, featuring the Oscar-nominated Viggo Mortensen.

We are utterly excited to collaborate with the incredible David Heyman and Austin Butler on this adaptation of Don Winslow’s breathtaking trilogy, starting with City on Fire,” stated Elizabeth Gabler, the head of Sony 3000, when the project was first announced. “Don is a legendary author and a master in suspenseful crime fiction. He has crafted a character in Danny Ryan who is both complex and engaging. Imagining Austin, with his exceptional talent, bringing this narrative to life is truly a dream come true.

Winslow himself also shared his enthusiasm, stating, “Just like many fans around the globe, I was mesmerized by Austin Butler’s Oscar-nominated portrayal in Elvis. I’ve had numerous discussions with Austin about this trilogy I’ve devoted nearly three decades to shaping, and I genuinely respect his commitment to portraying Danny Ryan. His passion for this project, alongside David, Shane, Elizabeth, and Marisa, brings such optimism.
