Junior Alvarado, the talented jockey who skillfully guided Sovereignty to triumph at this year’s Kentucky Derby, now faces consequences stemming from his conduct during the race. The Horseracing Integrity and Safety Authority (HISA) announced on Saturday that Alvarado exceeded the whip usage limit.

According to HISA guidelines, jockeys are restricted to a maximum of six strikes during a race; however, Alvarado was found to have used his whip eight times on Sovereignty. This infraction marks his second violation within a 180-day period, resulting in a heftier fine of $62,000, which equates to 20% of his earnings from the thrilling Derby.

In addition to the fine, Alvarado has been suspended for two racing days in Kentucky, specifically on May 29 and 30. While he retains the right to appeal this decision, no statement from him has surfaced yet.

The 38-year-old jockey orchestrated an exhilarating ride as he led Sovereignty past the favored Journalism in a remarkable finish. However, it’s noteworthy that Sovereignty will not be participating in the upcoming Preakness Stakes, the second leg of the illustrious Triple Crown of American horse racing.
