The buzz around filmmaker Jane Schoenbrun has reached a fever pitch following their captivating debut feature, We’re All Going to the World’s Fair. This intriguing film not only won over audiences but also caught the eye of Emma Stone, who took an active role as producer for Schoenbrun’s sophomore project, I Saw the TV Glow. While Chris Bumbray delivered a lukewarm 5/10 review of the latter (you can check it out here), one cannot ignore the praise from film icon Martin Scorsese. Now, in exciting news, The Hollywood Reporter has unveiled that the incredibly talented Hannah Einbinder from Hacks and the legendary Gillian Anderson of The X-Files will star in Schoenbrun’s next venture, titled Teenage Sex and Death at Camp Miasma. And let’s be honest: that title alone is sure to pique curiosity!
Schoenbrun has described the concept as a thrilling blend of high art and horror: envisioning it as “Portrait of a Lady on Fire meets a Friday the 13th sequel.” To clarify, for those unfamiliar, Portrait of a Lady on Fire is a stunning 2019 French historical romantic drama by Céline Sciamma, exploring the passionate and tragic love story between a painter and her subject. And we all know what to expect from Friday the 13th: slasher mayhem in the woods, complete with a notorious killer and plenty of suspense.
Adding another layer of intrigue, the film will be produced by Plan B Entertainment—co-founded by Brad Pitt, Dede Gardner, and Jeremy Kleiner. It’s being financed and distributed by arthouse darling Mubi, spanning territories that include North America, Latin America, the U.K., Ireland, Germany, Austria, and more. Executive producer Daniel Bekerman from Scythia Films rounds out this impressive lineup.
The plot promises to be a wild ride, centering around a queer filmmaker brought in to helm a new installment in a long-standing slasher series. The narrative dives deep into the psychological chaos as the director becomes obsessed with casting the ‘final girl’ from the original movie, leading both women into a spiral of psychosexual tension.
Excited about this project, Schoenbrun expressed to The Hollywood Reporter: “I create films that I wished existed during my childhood. Teenage Sex and Death at Camp Miasma represents my interpretation of the ultimate ‘sleepover classic’: a wild yet cozy late-night adventure that lures unsuspecting viewers from the horror aisle of their local video store. I couldn’t be more thrilled to dive into sleepaway camp this summer with the hysterically brilliant Hannah Einbinder, the iconic Gillian Anderson, and the fearless teams at Mubi and Plan B, who by greenlighting this project have summoned an avalanche of blood and visceral excitement to flood our screens.“
