The legendary Hideo Kojima has already envisioned a plot for Death Stranding 3, although he doesn’t plan to take the reins himself this time.
Death Stranding made a remarkable debut as Kojima Productions’ first title, captivating players and pushing the boundaries of storytelling and gameplay. Next month, fans will be treated to the highly anticipated sequel, Death Stranding 2: On the Beach.
While it remains uncertain if Kojima intends for Death Stranding to evolve into a sprawling franchise, the sequel introduces an innovative narrative device that opens the door for future expansions—**beware of potential story spoilers ahead!**
In an insightful Q&A during a recent preview, Kojima elaborated on his decision to set the sequel in Australia instead of the familiar landscapes of America. He suggested that this choice could be further explored in future titles.
“Given that America has the UCA (United Cities of America), I had to decide whether to adopt a similar concept for the sequel,” Kojima explained. “My initial vision had players disconnecting everything they had connected, learning that their connections were a mistake. However, reusing the same environment felt uninspired.”
“I was searching for a massive area, spanning east to west like America and bordered by ocean to the north and south. While Eurasia or Africa felt too expansive, Australia seemed just right in terms of size and scope.”
Kojima then introduced the intriguing concept of the Plate Gate, a mechanism within the game that allows protagonist Sam Porter-Bridges to traverse to new continents and diverse settings.
“Using this Plate Gate could open up endless possibilities for sequels!” Kojima remarked enthusiastically. “Though I don’t have plans to create them myself, I do have a concept for another sequel in mind. If I were to hand it over to someone else, I believe they could bring it to life.”
